Dr Mike Martin   PhD MA BAppSc(Hum Mov) BA Dip Ed

Psychologist

I fell in love with the idea of letting go of negativity, fear and self-doubt as a young man.

That’s when I first realised that a focus on what I wanted in life, was a way more useful and productive mindset than being stuck in my head trying to figure out why something didn’t go my way… and I’ve never looked back.  I’ve carried that distaste for buying into my own negative thinking into my professional practice.

While I was traditionally trained in CBT, I still spent my a good amount of my career trying to find efficient strategies for how my clients could get out of your head and get on with their life.

But the moment I discovered the let-go-and-live-the-life-you-love approach of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), I knew that I had the ultimate lever to good mental health.

And I’ve applied these ACT concepts to clients in many different situations and circumstances - everything from high performance sport to mental health issues to eating disorder treatment.

While I started out as generalist in psychology, I quickly saw that my greatest breakthroughs came when dealing with men.

As a result, I developed an ACT-based thinking system to help men quickly see the “why” behind their dysfunctional behaviour (Hint: It’s their constant focus on the things they can’t control)  and give them the skills to pivot out of their head and get on with their life.

The PIVOT System program brings all my best ideas together into a framework clients can use to accelerate towards good mental health, regardless of their current situation.

When clients think about their mental health along a Towards and Away continuum, they can learn to use the skills and strategies necessary to take their mental health to the next level.

I am married with two children and live in the Shire.  I like to surf and train so I can keep surfing.
